Immediate Relief Techniques for Vertigo
Epley Maneuver The gold standard for treating vertigo. This series of head and body movements is designed to shift calcium crystals in the inner ear (a common cause of vertigo). Please note that as a vestibular therapist, I do not advise doing the Epley on your own and am providing this for educational purposes only. The biggest reasons I don't advise doing the Epley at home:
you can cut off blood circulation to your brain (a vestibular therapist clears the vertebral artery to make sure you are not at risk of this)
your head needs to be positioned at certain positions in order for the maneuver to be effective, so there is potential you can make the vertigo worse
Semont Maneuver Another maneuver that can help relieve vertigo fast is the Semont Maneuver. It involves moving from sitting to lying on one side and then rapidly switching to the other. This technique helps reposition inner ear debris, providing immediate relief.
Vestibular Exercises Simple head and eye movement exercises, such as head nods, head turns or eye movements, can retrain the brain to handle dizziness more effectively. These exercises are excellent for those wondering what relieves dizziness in the short term.
Natural Remedies and Lifestyle Adjustments for Long-Term Vertigo Management
Hydration and Electrolytes Dehydration can worsen dizziness and vertigo symptoms. Increasing water intake and replenishing electrolytes can be a simple yet effective dizziness natural treatment. Read about my favorite electrolyte products on my Magnesium blog
Herbal Supplements Some herbs, such as ginger and ginkgo biloba, have been shown to reduce vertigo symptoms. Ginger candy is a simple and popular choice for managing nausea and dizziness. Commonly found at Sprouts but also on Amazon
Acupressure and Massage Stimulating acupressure points, like the P6 point on the wrist, can help alleviate nausea and dizziness. Additionally, myofascial release and cranial work can improve blood flow and nervous system regulation.
Motion Sickness Bands
I love these as they work for sea sickness, motion sickness and easy to wear. They have helped me on several boat rides, altitude sickness and so much more: https://amzn.to/3DrMLEK
The Reliefband is also an option, but I have heard varied feedback regarding this: https://amzn.to/3PbfQqs

Motion Sickness Patches are incredibly effective. These are my favorite, all natural patches: https://amzn.to/3ZSwqjU
Anti-Inflammatory Diet A diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods, such as leafy greens, berries, and omega-3 fatty acids, can help reduce inner ear inflammation, which may contribute to vertigo.
Balance Training Proprioceptive exercises and balance training help strengthen the body's awareness and control, reducing susceptibility to dizziness and imbalance.
Nervous System Regulation Dizziness, nausea and vestibular issues can involve an overactive nervous system that is constantly living in fight-or-flight. Calming the nervous system can reduce pain intensity and promote healing. Society today is terrible to our nervous systems and the vagus nerve. It was not programmed to handle the frequency and intensity of the stressors of today’s world. Improving vagus nerve dysfunction teaches your system to be flexible when faced with a stressor or “trigger” and how to accurately “read” them and respond appropriately. I have many free resources for vagus nerve activation on my site at www.releaseology.com/vagus plus book with me with my services below. I ALWAYS recommend the NKT Vagus Nerve Combo to assess where the pain is coming from and then relieve you, but if you want full vagus nerve time, book the Vagus Nerve Harmony Massage. If you don't live locally, I also offer vagus nerve services virtually.
Identifying and Managing Vertigo Triggers
To manage vertigo effectively, it’s crucial to identify personal triggers. Common triggers include:
Stress and anxiety
Sleep deprivation
Sudden head movements
Caffeine and alcohol consumption
Keeping a symptom journal can help track triggers and patterns, empowering you to make informed lifestyle adjustments.
