Treatment and Therapies for
the Vagus Nerve
The vagus nerve plays a vital role in your body’s overall health and well-being, influencing everything from digestion to heart rate and stress regulation. When this nerve isn’t functioning optimally, it can lead to various symptoms, including anxiety, poor digestion, chronic pain, and more. If you’re seeking solutions to improve or manage vagus nerve function, you’ve come to the right place. This guide will cover effective treatments and therapies, from medical interventions to holistic practices, that support vagus nerve healing.

At Releaseology, I use a blend of different techniques learning from a physical therapist, chiropractors and a functional medicine doctor to blend several techniques to help with the vagus nerve. I have both in person (hands on) services in Tempe, Arizona or you can book a virtual session with me. Click here for my list of vagus nerve services and to book

Why is the vagus nerve so important?
The vagus nerve is the longest nerve in our body, starting from the brainstem (back of your brain) to your large intestine with multiple branches along the way. It therefore, is exposed to multiple "choke points," if you will. Think of how numbing it is to fall asleep on your arm except the vagus nerve travels through half of our body!

The vagus nerve controls or relays signal from the ears, tongue, muscles of the throat and airways, heart and lungs, almost EVERY digestive organ in our body, kidneys and some sexual organ function. Vagus nerve dysfunction can therefore result in a PLETHORA of symptoms and diagnoses

The vagus nerve is responsible for putting you in
or
Fight, Flight or Freeze
Rest and Digest
it is in EITHER of these states and can never be in both. So, our body saves certain actions to perform for when we are TRULY in a rest state. For example, filtering of red and white blood cells is a non-priority during a chronic stress state. So, if we are chronically in a state of fight, flight or freeze (all of us are) there are certain actions that never get a chance to begin or complete.

Vagus Nerve Massage Therapy
Vagus nerve massage therapy targets specific points along the abdomen, diaphragm, head, face, neck and shoulders to stimulate this essential nerve. Using gentle pressure on vagus nerve massage points, therapists can encourage relaxation, reduce inflammation, and promote better nerve function. Incorporating vagus nerve massage into your routine can enhance overall nervous system health and improve symptoms of dysfunction.
Vagus Nerve Dysfunction Treatment
Vagus nerve dysfunction can manifest in various ways, such as chronic stress, gastrointestinal issues, and even vertigo. Treatment often involves a combination of approaches, including:
-
Medical interventions: Medications or devices like vagus nerve stimulators
-
Holistic therapies: Breathing exercises, neck stretches, and mindfulness practices designed to stimulate the nerve naturally. I have written this in more detail below

At Releaseology, my vagus nerve dysfunction treatments are tailored to you and the symptoms that you're dealing with. Vagus Nerve Massage Therapy and NKT Vagus Nerve Combo include hands-on therapy with assessment of where your vagus nerve is most "stuck". Those are the two services I recommend the most, the biggest difference is if you want MORE focus on Vagus Nerve, book the Vagus Nerve Massage Therapy, if you're also having pain in your neck, jaw, back or more, book the NKT Vagus Nerve Combo. The Assess Your Vagus Nerve is for those that want a deeper dive and is a bit more invasive with me looking into your jaw. If you don't live close to Tempe, I offer two virtual services: the difference between the two is if you also want to purchase the NeuroFIT app to pair with consistent success and practices every day. Book the Vagus Nerve Harmony Virtual Guidance for no app and Nervous System Fitness Session to pair with the NeuroFIT app.

Admittedly, this tape sounded super scary. But after my research with the vagus nerve, it's a FANTASTIC way to train yourself to be a nose-breather, all while you're sleeping. I slept so much deeper, too!
